ADOPT

Catelowna acts as a foster home, facilitating a central place to meet the adoptable cats of various rescue centres located locally, across BC and Saskatchewan. Our adoption system will operate on a first-come first serve basis, based on the first email contact we receive from someone who has met a cat in person at the cafe.

We will not be conducting same day adoptions, and the process may take up to 2 weeks.

Adoption Fee

All adoptable cats have a vet recovery cost fee of $350 - PST is added for cats coming from BC rescues.

This includes:-

  • Spay or Neuter

  • 2 FVRCP, or similar, vaccines. The most recent being renewed within the last 12 months

  • 1 rabies vaccine, renewed in the last 3 years

  • A minimum of one de-wormer performed in the last 3 months

  • Earmite prevention

  • A snap test to detect FIV and negative for FeLV (valued at over $150 depending on which vet you go to)

  • Microchip ID detection insertion

Not Included:-

  • Transport and labour to initially rescue the cat

  • Transport and labour to and from the vet to get them to this high standard of vaccination status

  • Food, litter, stimulus and rent to house the cat while in holding time.

  • The hours and emotional toll on individuals to get the cat to an adoptable point

Adoption fees from our partnered rescues do not cover the full cost of what it takes to rescue a cat. Our kitties are not ‘just’ cats - they are precious souls that become dear family members. We consider the true value they add to our lives as priceless.

The Process

  • Establish whether you are ready to adopt. Do you have the time commitment, space, right environment, budget and future to take on a cat that could live 20 years or more? They will require food, toys, litter, veterinary care and love that whole time.

  • Meet the cats and inform the Lounge Attendant you would like to adopt. Be prepared to outline your lifestyle and the energy level of your home so you can be directed to a perfect match. Our goal is to put effort into the match making process to give adopters the best chance possible at long term success

  • Go home and contemplate the kitties you met. Sleep on it and if you are still interested in a particular kitty the next day, we can arrange a follow-up visit to just double check your feelings.

  • Fill out an adoption application form. Our partners will review applications and may contact you directly for a chat, for an initial screening and to arrange a house visit if need be.

  • Pay the adoption fee directly to the rescue centre that ‘owns’ the cat.

  • Arrange pick-up - whoo hoo! Please bring a carrier case

We want human families to have their expectations met or exceeded in their new family member, even if that means we guide you to a cat not currently at the cafe.

Kitten Adoption

We believe that most behaviour issues in kittens and cats are due to single kitten adoptions. We want adopters to be successful with their cats and the best long term mental and emotional health for all cats. We do not recommend single kitten adoptions and encourage you to research more about the benefits of adopting two kittens. Here is a great article that explains Why Two Kittens Are Better Than One
